The kind gesture has been made by Stagecoach and East Yorkshire Buses
Hull bus operators are supporting serving military, veterans, and cadets on both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
- Stagecoach – parent of Hull bus operator Stagecoach East Midlands – and East Yorkshire Buses have announced that free travel will be available on its bus services for all serving military, cadets, and veterans on Remembrance Sunday, November 8, and Armistice Day, Wednesday November 11.
- For both companies, the offer applies to any serving military or cadet in uniform, those with a military ID card, and veterans wearing medals or badges, attending remembrance services.
- Matt Cranwell, managing director of Stagecoach East Midlands, said: “Remembrance Day and Armistice Day are significant occasions that are close to the hearts of many of our colleagues and customers, and we are very pleased to be making this commitment that will, hopefully, help people attend memorials across the UK. We have thousands of ex-forces colleagues working across our business, and our Veterans Network allows us to build on the work Stagecoach has led over many years to identify how else we can support those veterans already working for us and those that may want to come and join the company.”
- Stagecoach’s dedication to offering free travel for the Armed Forces is supported by its colleague-led Veterans Network. The network was established to unite Stagecoach employees, giving them a platform to drive positive change, raise awareness, shape business decisions, and implement new initiatives that enhance the company.
- Stagecoach has been a member of the Armed Forces Covenant since March 2015. The Covenant recognises the value of serving military, regular and reservists, veterans and military families across the country. The company is also a Gold employee award holder, as part of The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, for its commitment to the armed forces community.
- Meanwhile, a spokesperson for East Yorkshire Buses said: “As a company with many colleagues who have served in the military, we are honoured to show our support and gratitude to the Armed Forces community. This offer is our way of helping veterans and serving personnel attend remembrance events, visit family and friends, and take part in commemorations across our region. Veterans and serving members are welcome to travel free of charge on all East Yorkshire bus services by simply showing a valid military ID card, Veterans Card, or by wearing military uniform or medals when boarding.”
- At 11am on both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, East Yorkshire Buses’ drivers will also observe the national two-minute silence, pulling over safely where operationally possible. The firm says it invites passengers travelling with them “to join in this moment of reflection as we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, those who served before us, and those who continue to serve today”.
- East Yorkshire buses added: “Many members of the East Yorkshire team are veterans themselves and, where appropriate, some colleagues may choose to wear regimental medals or other service insignia as a mark of respect and remembrance. To all who have served, those who continue to serve, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we thank you. Their courage, dedication and service will never be forgotten. We will remember them.”
