Adventurer Karl has been walking across the world for 28 years
Let’s give Karl a Hull welcome home
- That is the message from Hull City Council as the epic travels of Karl Bushby are coming to a close. Within days, Karl, who set out from his mother’s home on Sutton Park in October 1998, will once more stride into Newtondale – 28 years after he left.
- Residents and visitors are encouraged to gather in Queen Victoria Square to welcome home Hull-born Karl as he completes the final leg of his intrepid 28-year walk around the world. He is due to arrive there at about 11am on Monday, November 2; well-wishers are encouraged to gather there from 10am.
- Lord Mayor of Hull Councillor Maria Coward invites residents and visitors to join her in welcoming Karl back to the city. On the final leg of his journey (and penultimate stop-off in the city centre before he continues home) Karl will make his way into Queen Victoria Square.
- “So many people have followed Karl on his epic journey,” said the Lord Mayor. “We have all felt inspired by his spirit, tenacity and dogged determination to carry on in challenges faced by the most fearless of explorers. We all share pride in his incredible achievement. We also know what it’s like to come home to Hull, that feeling as your car or train – or feet in Karl’s case – crosses or goes under the Humber Bridge and over the city boundary. As the world’s media and documentary crews gather in our city we can show them how proud we are of Karl’s achievement and how proud we are to be from Hull.”
- Karl will be welcomed into Queen Victoria Square by the Hull Volunteers. The Lord Mayor will welcome Karl briefly onto a stage area at the front of the City Hall. A brief private reception in the City Hall will follow.
- Karl will then recommence the very final leg of his journey northwards to his family home, bringing to a close his legendary journey. After leaving Newtondale, the now 57-year-old headed for South America and it was from here, from its southern tip, that he began his solo footslog back to the UK, unassisted by any form of mechanical transport.
