The Met Office says gusts in excess of 55mph are ‘likely’ along with heavy rainfall
A 33-hour weather warning has been issued for Hull and East Yorkshire with Storm Boelo expected to bring a “very windy and wet spell” this weekend. The season’s second named storm follows soon after Austen which has brought gusts of more than 70mph to southern parts of England and Wales today.
The impacts of Boelo are expected to be more widespread with a yellow wind warning covering much of northern England as well as Scotland. The alert will come into force at 12pm on Saturday and is set to remain in place until 9pm on Sunday.
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, Mark Sidaway, said: “Saturday morning will start dry and bright in the east of the UK, however further west rain and increasingly windy conditions will already be set in as people wake up for the day. This stormy weather will continue to move eastwards bringing rain and windy conditions to all of the UK.
“There are a number of severe weather warnings issued for Storm Boelo, including an Amber warning for all of mainland Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland and the very far north of England. Gusts could reach up to 80mph in places. More widely, gusts will still reach 50-60mph and spells of heavy rain could also lead to some impacts.
“People should prepare by securing loose items outside their property, being ready in case of power outages and being aware of likely travel disruption.”
In its warning, the Met Office says “injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible” while there could be some damage to buildings and trees. Transport may be affected and some roads and bridges may close or see restrictions. There is also a risk of power cuts while those near the coast are being warned “injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties”.
In East Yorkshire, gusts of 45-55mph are expected on Saturday and Sunday along with periods of heavy rain, particularly on Saturday afternoon and evening before clearing overnight. Temperatures will peak at 12-13C with overnight lows between 6 and 8C.
Showers are forecast on Sunday with another period of rain and gusty winds expected to arrive on Monday.
