The Roar and Explore centre is set to open in a former mead distillery

A former mead distillery in the East Riding of Yorkshire is set to be transformed into an indoor children’s play centre after getting the green light from planners. Plans were submitted earlier this year to convert the unit at Windsor Court Business Park, on the Pocklington Industrial Estate, into the recreation centre by Roar & Explore Ltd.

The unit was previously used by Nidhoggr Mead Co Ltd, which stopped trading when it was placed into administration earlier this year. Now planners have given the new tenants permission to convert the commercial unit into the play centre, complete with associated works including the construction of a covered buggy shelter.

The plans include the vibrant play area, a reception, cafe, a parents’ seating area, children’s party room and welfare facilities. The firm has submitted supporting statement as part of its application highlighting how the scheme “creates local employment, brings a vacant commercial unit back into use and provides an indoor leisure facility for local families.”

It added: “The proposal will bring an existing commercial building back into productive use, create local employment opportunities and provide a high-quality indoor leisure facility for families within Pocklington and the surrounding area. No extensions to the building are proposed. External alterations are limited to the installation of business signage, with existing access and parking arrangements remaining unchanged.”

The East Riding of Yorkshire Council has granted approval for the conversion, subject to conditions, under delegated powers. A report accompanying the decision added: “The use as the building for an indoor play centre, whilst not currently present, is considered to be adequately in keeping with the uses found on industrial estates, and the comings and goings from the use would not detract from the character of the area.”
