The Hull man said nowhere does the classic dish like Britain

Fans have told adventurer Karl Bushby to wait until he’s back on Humberside soil for the best fish and chips. The 57 year-old showed followers on social media as he tucked into his first plate of fish, chips and mushy peas saying it was the best he’d had in 28 years.

Karl was in a pub in Dover, where he landed having swam across the English Channel, before setting off for his mum’s house at Sutton Park. That will mark the end of an epic, 28-year trek around the world on foot.

In the video, Karl says: “I’m here in Dover and I’m about to have my first fish and chips and mushy peas – a word I’ve not heard for a long time – but this is the first fish and chips. I’ve spent 28 years criticising the world and their versions of fish and chips, in many countries.

“So, hopefully this is going to go down a treat. Now I know I’m home. Mushy peas, come on!”

In his post, Karl says he can “immediately tell the difference” having been served a “nice big bit of fish in a decent batter”. He added: “Almost everywhere you go, it’s something out of a packet and it’s thinner and smaller.”

Viewers weighed in, in the comments, with many telling Karl he would find the best fish and chips on home soil. One wrote: “Wait until you get back home they’ll taste better in ‘ull!”

Another said: “Love that you had a chippy tea but you know it will be even better when you get home back north and it’s haddock”. One joked: “Are they oven chips?! Enjoy! Nowt like fish and chips when ya get back home. One of my first things. After an Egg Custard on the way oop the M1.”

And some even had chippy recommendations for former paratropper Karl – who is now on the 400km journey back to Sutton Park. One said: “The chippy on Grandale shops is still a good one Karl. You’ll know you’re home then”. And: “Wait till you get back to Hull and have a pattie…then you know you are back in Hull.”
