The East Riding group performed Snow Island
The East Riding of Yorkshire Band has secured a top three finish at the National Brass Band Championships. The Hessle-based group, which attracts players from all over the East Riding of Yorkshire, won third place in the Third Section, competing against the best bands from across the country.
Held at the York Barbican, the national finals brought together 20 qualifying bands who had secured top-two finishes at their respective regional contests earlier in the year. The East Riding group performed Snow Island by Thierry Deleruyelle – a challenging test piece they said was delivered confidently and with a performance that impressed judges enough to be awarded a podium place.
The result comes in a “landmark year” for the band, following their second place finish at the North of England Regional Championships and having secured promotion to the Second Section for 2027. Organisers say the achievement highlighted remarkable progress the band has made in recent years, from building and developing the ensemble to competing at the highest level of their section.
Jonathan Evison, chair of the East Riding of Yorkshire Band, said: “It’s been a very exciting time for the band. After weeks of intense rehearsals, the players truly performed out of their skins. Rarely are contest performances as electric as this — strong ensemble playing, real depth and breadth of sound, controlled pianissimo passages, and outstanding soloists all came together. From the smiles on the players’ faces, everyone knew we had played well.”
Richard Grantham, musical director, added: “The band delivered a magnificent performance of Snow Island on Sunday, earning widespread admiration and gaining many new supporters from across the country.” The band thanked supporters, families, and the local community along with organisers and volunteers, and said it is now looking ahead to its time in the Second Section.
