Giles almost departed in the summer transfer window
Ryan Giles says he is appreciative for the support shown to him by the club over a potential summer exit, with the full-back now determined to build on his impressive start to the season.
The 26-year-old left-back was wanted by a number of clubs in the summer with Burnley making the most serious move as they agreed a deal that would take the player on loan to Turf Moor for the campaign, with an option to buy next summer. The Tigers had considered Giles as one of the players who could depart as they reshaped their squad for an assault on the top-flight.
However, after impressing in pre-season and backing that up with a man-of-the-match display in the season opener against Manchester United, Giles had already convinced head coach Sergej Jakirovic that he didn’t want the player to depart, with the playing squad sharing that sentiment.
The man who signed from Luton Town in June 2024 after an initial loan spell, was kept on. And since then he’s continued to shine, with another impressive display against Chelsea, including an assist for Mo Belloumi’s opener which typified his work rate and approach to his Premier League chance.
Speaking about his flirtation with an unwanted exit, Giles is appreciative of the support at the training ground and is determined to keep his form and impact going.
“I always wanted to stay at Hull City,” Giles told Hull Live.. “It is a brilliant opportunity for me to play Premier League football this year.
“Things come about and the club had to have a look at the situation. They obviously wanted me to stay and I appreciate that. It is about me kicking on now and keep trying to put in positive performances for the team. Hopefully long may that continue.”
The defender’s display against Chelsea and in particular the way he handled the likes of Pedro Neto and Cole Palmer will only serve to increase his confidence further as City prepare to face Newcastle United at St James’ Park next before the international break.
“I’m definitely not the finished article, but it is important that I play to my strengths. If I can keep doing that I can help the team,” adds Giles, who also acknowledged the increased pressure on all the players thanks to the high number of new arrivals.
“We needed depth within the squad, but we have boys who have really stepped up from last season. There is a lot of quality in the squad and that is a good headache for the manager.
“It’s about us all sticking together and that we keep pushing each other, that is important. A good togetherness can take us a long way.”

City will hope that togetherness and the quality shown so far can take them beyond Newcastle this Saturday as they try to go into a three-week break with their unbeaten record intact. Picking up a point at Chelsea, in a match that could easily have yielded all three points, will no doubt have boosted confidence further.
“We’re really happy with the result. For us to come to a place like this and get a point is a brilliant result for us,” says Giles.
“We tried to avoid them scoring early, but I am really delighted with how we responded to that. It says a lot about us as a team. It shows we can still be a threat even when we have gone behind. We take a lot of positives that we still haven’t taken a loss yet. We won’t get too carried away, we’ll learn from this.”
