Hull City defied expectations again with a great display at Stamford Bridge
Everything you need to know about Hull City’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge
- Hull City came from behind to draw 2-2 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Mo Belloumi scoring both goals for the Tigers.
- City boss Sergej Jakirovic made just one change from the last Premier League game against Aston Villa, with Matt Crooks brought back into the team in place of Lucas Gourna-Douath.
- Chelsea had scored within five minutes in each of their opening three games, but it took an extra 120 seconds for them to break through the only defence yet to concede a goal in the league this season. Morgan Rogers broke the early deadlock on seven minutes, smashing the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
- City equalised after 28 minutes through Mo Belloumi. The goal came out of the blue, from a ball forward over the top by Tzolakis. Ryan Giles got to it, crossed and it fell kindly for Belloumi who struck it with his left foot and sent the travelling fans wild.
- The Tigers almost went ahead soon after. More good work from Giles and Elliot Stroud had Chelsea on the back foot, with Lewie Coyle almost getting an unlikely goal. But the City support didn’t have to wait long to celebrate again through that man Belloumi. Chelsea keeper Emiliano Martinez missed a corner and after Semi Ajayi’s header his the crossbar, the rebound came to Belloumi who made sure to stick the ball in the net. City, on the live table, were top of the Premier League.
- Chelsea had 65% of the possession in the first half, almost double the amount of passes and won seven corners to City’s two. But all that mattered was the scoreline, with City leading 2-1 at the break.
- Nobel Mendy went off after a head injury, with Jakirovic making three changes at the same time on 60 minutes. Lucas Herrington, Mohamed-Ali Cho and Sorba Thomas came on for the injured Mendy, Stroud and goal hero Belloumi.
- Not long after the triple-change Chelsea were level through the Premier League player of the month, Joao Pedro. Cole Palmer’s low-driven cross finds Pedro to score on the 66th minute.
- New signing from Everton Tim Iroegbunam came on for his debut with 20 minutes to go, replacing Matt Crooks.
- With just three minutes remaining the best chance of the game fell to substitute Mohamed-Ali Cho, who had the goal at his mercy but he couldn’t score.
- The 2-2 draw keeps City third in the table as things stand with four games gone, seven points clear of the relegation zone.
- City had 13 shots on goal, one more than Chelsea’s 12, despite only having 33% of possession.
- The tigers picked up five yellow cards, Norton-Cuffy, Iroegbunam, Crooks, Egan and McBurnie.
