Viewers can expect a few wonky edges and some cracking clay creations

A new five-part show coming to our TV screens this weekend will show Lucy Beaumont turning her attention from comedy to clay. The Hull writer and actor is donning her apron and discovering the joys – or not – of the potter’s wheel in Channel 4’s The Great Celebrity Pottery Throw Down, the first episode airing on Sunday, September 13, at 7.45pm.

In a twist on the much-loved original format, there will be no weekly elimination; instead the celebrity contestants will get to immerse themselves in the pottery studio, learning and developing their skills under the expertise of judges Keith Brymer Jones and Rich Miller. The celebrities will compete for points in each challenge in the hope of earning a place in the grand final, where just one of them will be announced as the winner of the series and crowned champion of The Great Celebrity Pottery Throw Down.

This series will be hosted by actor, presenter and author Liza Tarbuck and will see six celebrities, each with little to no pottery experience, braving the clay and taking to the wheel in a series of bold ceramic challenges. The celebrities joining Lucy in getting their hands dirty and unleashing their creativity are comedian, writer, actor and author Fatiha El-Ghorri; comedian and podcaster Richard Herring; football legend and pundit Paul Merson; star of stage and screen Layton Williams and actress, singer, dancer and presenter Denise Van Outen.

Viewers can expect a few wonky edges, and some cracking clay creations as each celebrity grows in confidence and ability. But who will be holding their breath, waiting to see if their muddy masterpieces emerge from the kiln intact; who will reduce Keith to tears with their creative ceramics, and who will crack under the pressure as the competition gets more competitive over the weeks?

In a post earlier this year when the show was first announced, Lucy said: ‘“Sometimes it felt like the Priory, sometimes it felt like a Pottery Show but I had such a wonderful time with this cast and crew. DID I WIN THOUGH? ?????? @potterythrow”.

Show host Liza said: “I knew I’d enjoy Keith and Rich’s company and I did. People flourish around emotionally intelligent people, and the boys’ encouragement and kindness really promoted a growth in our newbie potters that was a pleasure to witness. I absolutely loved being there.”

Luke Byrne, executive producer, Love Productions, said: “It’s very exciting to be working with Channel 4 on this new series. It shows there is an appetite for more pottery with the success of The Great Pottery Throw Down.

“It will be a real eye opener to see what it’s like to be a novice potter through the eyes of enthusiastic celebrities and hopefully reaching a wider audience to this incredible craft.”

Deborah Dunnett, commissioning editor, Channel 4, said: “The Great Celebrity Pottery Throw Down is a wonderfully heart-warming series. For the first time we are able to discover pottery through the eyes of real beginners and follow their creative progression through to a deeply personal finale with some show-stopping results.”
