The Robins thumped Huddersfield Giants 36-6 on Peters’ last home game as KR head coach
Willie Peters still has work to do at Hull KR after seeing his side book their spot in the play-offs with a win over Huddersfield Giants on his final night at Craven Park.
The Robins beat Huddersfield 36-6 to secure a top six berth with Arthur Mourgue scoring twice, while Elliot Minchella, Jack Broadbent, Tom Davies and Jez Litten also touched down.
It was the ideal way for KR to get back to winning ways after three straight defeats and it was also the best way for Peters to say farewell to east Hull, with Peters heading back down under at the end of the campaign.
The Robins boss still has at least two matches with his side, but they’ll both be played on the road, with St Helens next week to be followed by an eliminator against Warrington Wolves, Wakefield Trinity or Leigh Leopards.
Ultimately then, Peters didn’t allow himself to get too emotional on Friday evening with the Australian remaining focused on the task at hand.
“I don’t want to reflect now, I want to finish the job first but there’s no doubt that coming here tonight was emotional,” Peters said after seeing his side thump Huddersfield.
“I have my routine of what I do and obviously knowing it was the last time I would be in that box. It won’t sink in yet, but I’m proudest coach in the world when I’m in that box at Craven Park, but the job is done yet.
“We need to make sure we finish the job in the right way. I’ll always be a Robin and this club will always mean so much to me. Coaching here is a unique experience.”
On the game itself, Peters added: “Really happy, we had to work hard for it. The scoreline might indicate it was a lot easier than it was but we had to work extremely hard. They’re a good team.
“I was just happy that after going away from our good start, we built the game again and grinded away. We found points late, we found a way at the end to get some points.
“There’s no doubt they were energised and so they should. Last week there were guys carrying injuries and three or four that could have played but they’d played almost every minute this year and it was a good opportunity to give them a breath. They came out with energy and I could see yesterday at training they were full of energy and they carried that into the game.”
