The junior rugby team went head-to-head with dads at Johnny Whiteley Park
More than £1,000 has been raised for mental health charity MIND following a ‘lads vs dads’ rugby match. West Hull Bobcats U14s put the dads team through their paces in a fundraising match at Johnny Whiteley Park.
The dads came out on top in the non-contact, touch game refereed by Mike Smith and which was the centrepiece of a charity day that raised vital funds for MIND, which provides life-saving information, support, and advice. Sponsorship came from Wrights Competitions.
Organisers said: “The dads have come out on top against the young guns… although the lads are currently conducting a full investigation into alleged cheating, suspicious decisions and some highly questionable dad tactics! Apparently, the Dads were “too old to be that fast”, “definitely holding” and “there’s no way that bloke should still have that much energy.”
Following the game, the team added: “A huge thank you to everyone that made it happen and attended. Despite it being a non-contact game, there is some sore dads hobbling around today with our bad backs and sore knees. Well worth it though to spend time on the pitch with the boys and raise money for a great cause.”
The charity day also featured stalls, live music and a tombola. The team has vowed to “go bigger” next year with even more ambition to give back to the community.
Mark Wilsher, who was involved in the game, said: “It was a really fun day played in the best of spirits and most importantly for a really great cause. It allows the young people in our team to give back and raise the profile of mental health, especially men’s mental health.”
West Hull Bobcats U14s have since played a friendly against East Hull 36-6. In a match report, the Bobcats said they “came out a little sleepy” but rose to the occasion after their opponents took an early lead. They said: “The lads responded brilliantly, brought themselves back into the game and came together to put on a good performance.”
