An off-duty police officer suffered serious facial injuries when he was attacked while trying to detain a suspected drink-driver.

The officer approached the man in Newland Avenue, Hull, at 22:30 BST on Tuesday and attempted to detain him as he waited for on-duty colleagues to attend, Humberside Police said.

The man, who appeared to be drunk, allegedly became aggressive and assaulted the off-duty officer.

The 33-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker and wounding with intent. He failed a roadside breath test and remained in custody on Wednesday.
