Charlie Hughes may be gearing up to play in the Premier League this season, but he has not forgotten his roots. The Hull City centre back achieved his dream of reaching promotion to the top flight this year, but his story began on smaller pitches.
Hughes is giving back to Golborne Sports in his hometown of Wigan. He is supporting the club that helped shape his career with a sponsorship commitment that will invest in new training kits and equipment for the grassroots organisation. The package is designed to support the next generation of young players at his hometown club, ensuring that aspiring footballers have access to the resources and opportunities that first inspired his own journey.
Hughes, who went on to join Wigan’s academy as an u14, said: “Everything I have achieved so far started at this club. The coaches, volunteers, my teammates and everyone involved gave me the opportunity to develop as a footballer. Reaching the Premier League is a dream come true, but I will never forget where it all began. This is my way of saying thank you and helping to create opportunities while raising standards for the next generation to follow their dreams.”
The sponsorship reflects his commitment to supporting grassroots football and recognises the role that community clubs play in developing talent, promoting healthy lifestyles and bringing local people together. Representatives from Golborne Sports called the deal a “significant investment in the club’s future”.
Club chairman Daniel Walker said: “We are incredibly proud of everything Charlie has achieved. Watching one of our own reach the Premier League is an inspiration to every young player who wears the Golborne Sports shirt. The sponsorship package is expected to benefit players across age groups, “enhancing the experience for hundreds of local children while reinforcing the club’s commitment to nurturing future talent”, the club said.
