Hull City Council has issued an update on the project

A road is set to reopen this week as work on a major improvement scheme in Hull continues. Hull City Council says Ennerdale (north) will be open northbound from Friday (July 31).
The update comes after a 10-week closure carried out as part of a major improvement scheme designed to increase the capacity of the Ennerdale Leisure Centre roundabout. The full road closure between the Thomas Clarkson Way / Ennerdale junction and Littondale was initially put in place in May to enable CityFibre to carry out necessary infrastructure works, though Littondale remained open throughout.
With CityFibre’s contractor having finished those initial works, teams are now moving on to install and switch connections to the replacement fibre optic cable. Because this phase requires additional time, traffic management will remain in place, keeping the southbound carriageway closed until mid-September.
To allow CityFibre to complete these works and prevent another disruption later in the year, the council agreed to extend the southbound-only closure and approve the necessary permit.
While northbound traffic can resume, a southbound diversion will remain active:
- Buses: Diversions will run via Sutton Road, Holwell Road, Nidderdale, and Littondale.
- All other traffic: Diversions will run via Ennerdale, Bude Road, John Newton Way, and Thomas Clarkson Way.
Crews have made significant progress over the last ten weeks. Key milestones achieved so far include the installation of new surface water drainage, combined kerb drainage, and filter drain systems, as well as completed utility diversions by Yorkshire Water and Northern Powergrid.
The council’s contractor, Hessle-based CR Reynold, also capitalised on the road closure to pull forward several tasks originally scheduled for later phases of the project. These included kerb tie-in works near the signalised crossing – originally planned for November – along with partial road widening and ground stabilisation on the southbound approach to the roundabout.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at the council, said: “We’d like to thank our residents, businesses and everyone travelling through this area for their continued patience while these works are carried out. We know roadworks are frustrating, but it is important that the network has the capacity to keep people moving safely.
“As the area continues to grow, these improvements are an investment in Kingswood’s future and will help reduce congestion in the years ahead. While we had hoped to re-open Ennerdale (north) in both directions this week, continuing the closure in one direction to allow CityFibre to complete their works is better for road users than further delays at a later date.
“By opening the northbound carriageway, we can support local residents and businesses and start getting traffic moving again. We’re working closely with our contractor to complete the scheme as quickly as we can, and I’d encourage motorists to plan ahead and allow a little extra time for their journeys while works continue.”
