Charles has made just one appearance since making the switch from Hull FC

Willie Peters believes Jack Charles needs another pre-season with Hull KR before he can be considered a real first-team option.
Charles made the move over to KR from cross-city rivals Hull FC in the off-season having impressed during runs in the Black and Whites first-team. He was highly rated at the MKM Stadium and he made 23 appearances for the club in his teenage years before making the move east.
He made his debut for Rovers in the Challenge Cup clash with Lock Lane back in February and scored two tries, but the 20-year-old hasn’t played since with his only game time coming in the colours of Goole Vikings, where he has made two appearances on loan.
There was a train of thought that this week’s clash against Charles’ former club would provide the perfect opportunity for the young half-back to show what he could do, with Mikey Lewis being suspended.
However, Peters went with Arthur Mourgue alongside Tyrone May in the halves, with Jack Broadbent coming back in to play full-back.
That’s because Peters doesn’t believe Charles is ready right now, but he certainly sees his potential and what he could become.
“Jack’s young and he’s trains so hard and works so hard on his game,” Peters said on the half-back. “There’s no doubt I believe that Jack is going to be a half-back at this club for a number of years.
“He’s got some experienced guys in front of him at the moment and with someone like Jack I think another pre-season at the club would be perfect. A new coach coming in, I’m sure he’ll be impressed with his attitude and the way he trains.
“It’s similar to when we had PLT here, it’s about developing him in the right way. Initially he was in League One and then we went Championship and whenever he gets some Super League games.
“Jack at the moment is more around playing that Championship level and we want him to excel at that level and then he’ll be ready to go in first-team. He’s a player that the club certainly have plans for in the future.
“He knows where he’s at. He got thrown in too early initially because he had to at FC, with injuries and things like that. There’s some games there where he played well but that could have dented a young half-back’s confidence.
“It’s important that you manage him in the right way and you put him in and start to give him games when he’s ready.
“Also how we play, because we play Tyrone on the ball, Jack is better suited to that right side. To put in on the left side that he’s not used to, defensively not used to, kicking on the wrong side, it’s probably not going to complement Tyrone and it’s not going to help Jack.”
