Willie Peters knows Hull KR must rediscover their identity if they’re to end the Super League season on a high once more.
The Robins head to Warrington Wolves this afternoon on the back of four losses in their last seven games with last weekend’s defeat to Wakefield Trinity being one of the must frustrating performances of Peters’ three and a half years in east Hull.
Such form has seen the defence of their League Leaders’ Shield fall away and prior to round 19 getting started, they sat in fifth, four points shy of the top two, with their spot in the play-offs at risk.
The trip to the Halliwell Jones Stadium is a must win for Rovers then if they are to secure their position in the top six heading into final weeks as Peters prepares to say his farewells and return down under.
The head coach is determined to go out as a winner though and if KR can do what they do best, they will give themselves a chance.
“We don’t want to be playing like we did last week,” Peters said. “This club and this team has a strong identity now and people who have watched us play expect a certain performance.
“That’s all I expect from this team, when you’ve got an identity and you know who are as a person, you’re consistent with that.
“I know what this team is about and what this club is about, that’s all I ask. It’s taken us to great places in the past. You never want to go away from who you are and what you’re about and that’s all I want us to do for the remainder of the year then let’s see where we are at the end.
“Give ourselves a chance by being us. It’s a simple message.”
Warrington currently sit two points ahead of Rovers in the league table having lost to Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards over the last fortnight.
There are similarities between the two sides then, but Peters believes the key to bouncing back could be belief.
“They’re all important now,” he added. “They’re obviously going through a few losses themselves. I think it’s probably a game where the team that simplifies things and finds their game early on, I think will be the team that win.
“For us, the key is just being great at a few different areas that we want to be great at this week. Our non-negotiable is competing on every play and if we do that, we’ll put ourselves in a strong position.
“I do want to see us express ourselves a little more with the ball. It’s important when you’re not at your best not to go into your shell and play one-out rugby. Still express yourself and back yourself because I back these players I want to see a bit of that as well.”
