Road closures are planned on some major routes in Hull over the coming days as an annual surface dressing programme gets underway. Hull City Council is set to upgrade 12 key roads to improve road safety, enhance skid resistance, and extend their overall lifespan.
Covering over 54,000 square metres of road network – equivalent to seven-and-a-half MKM Stadium pitches – the city-wide project will focus on major roads and main bus routes that are currently showing early signs of wear and tear. The maintenance programme is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 20.
Crews will only operate on weekdays, with no work planned over the weekends. All scheduled dates remain subject to weather conditions.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said: “Looking after our roads isn’t just about fixing potholes when they appear – it’s also about preventing them in the first place. Surface dressing is one of the most effective ways we can protect roads that are beginning to show signs of wear, helping them last longer and reducing the need for more extensive repairs in the future.
“We’re targeting some of Hull’s busiest routes, including key bus corridors, to keep the network in good condition and improve safety for everyone who uses them. We know these works can cause some short-term disruption and I’d like to thank residents, businesses and everyone travelling through the area for their patience while we carry out this important maintenance.”
Preparation work, including patching, crack sealing, and ironwork adjustments, is already underway to prepare the roads for treatment. Advanced warning notices will be posted at specific sites, and letter drops will be conducted to notify local residents. Contractors will also distribute detailed informational leaflets ahead of time.
The schedule of affected roads, start times, and traffic management is as follows:
- Cranbrook Avenue (Cottingham Road to Inglemire Lane) – Mobile Works – 6am – July 20
- Lindengate Way (Leads Road to Lindengate Avenue) – Road Closure – 11am – July 20
- Bridlington Avenue (Cannon Street to Francis Street) – Mobile Works – 1pm – July 20
- Cottingham Road (Chanterlands Avenue to Ferens Avenue) – Mobile Works – 6am – July 21
- Beverley Road Inbound (ERYC Boundary to Hall Road) – Road Closure – 9.30am – July 21
- Cottingham Road (Chanterlands Avenue to Hall Road Roundabout) – Mobile Works – 6am – July 22
- Richmond Lane (Grosvenor Road to Runnymede Lane) – Mobile Works – 9.30am – July 22
- Richmond Way (Grosvenor Road to West to 50m beyond Houses) – Mobile Works – 6am – July 23
- Beverley Road Outbound (Hall Road to ERYC Boundary) – Road Closure – 9.30am – July 23
- Arnold Lane (Anlaby Road to Anlaby Road) – Mobile Works – 6am – July 24
- Mount Pleasant (Hedon Road Roundabout to Ellis Street) – Road Closure – 10am – July 24
