Pupils were sent home for the day after the fire at Winifred Holtby Academy, which triggered the school’s sprinkler system and prompted a two-engine response from Humberside Fire and Rescue

A fire at a Hull secondary school caused a two-fire engine response and closed the school. The fire broke out at Winifred Holtby Academy, on Midmere Avenue, just after the morning school bell. The “minor fire” caused a full school closure for the rest of Tuesday.

Fire crews from Humberside Fire and Rescue attended the “small” fire just after 9.30am on Tuesday and arrived to find it had been extinguished by the school’s sprinkler system. A parent who spoke to Hull Live said his daughter had been sent home for the day.

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue said: “We received the call at 9.36am on 7 July to reports of a small fire that had triggered the sprinkler system within the building. We sent two fire engines who arrived quickly on scene and the small fire was already extinguished from the sprinkler system. Our firefighters checked the room and provided advice.”

Winifred Holtby Academy is part of the Consortium Academy Trust. A spokesperson from the trust said: “Winifred Holtby Academy is closed to students today following a minor fire, which was safely contained. We are incredibly proud of the way our students conducted themselves throughout the incident, demonstrating maturity and responsibility at all times.

“We would also like to thank parents and carers for their support and cooperation in helping us ensure students returned home safely and quickly. We are pleased to confirm that the academy will be fully operational tomorrow and open as normal, with Breakfast Club available from 7.50am and school gates opening at 8.05am for all students. Further information will be shared directly with parents.”
