‘We want to hear from people who might not have access to their own charging points’

A new website has been launched to capture the views and suggestions of East Riding residents on electric vehicle charging points, as part of a new project. East Riding Council is investing £100,000 in a scheme to roll out more public electric vehicle (EV) charging points at sites across the area, to help drivers of electric cars now and in the future.
The aim is to expand the number of public EV charging points already installed and to give people a say on where they would like them to go. The council wants to further support local communities by providing more on-street charging points and also off-street charging points in council-run car parks, as electric vehicles become more popular.
The project is designed to prepare the council for the forthcoming Government-funded Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) programme, which is currently in development and will lead to an even greater rollout of EV charging points across the area. The LEVI programme will aim to deliver on-street residential charging in areas where there is limited or no available off-street parking.
The scheme will focus on all settlement areas large and small, ensuring there is equitable coverage across the East Riding. As part of the new scheme, the council has created a consultation website in order to gather views from local residents, businesses, town and parish councils, and stakeholders about where new EV charging points are needed.
People will be asked to rate how urgently they require a charge point in a location and give the reasons why. The new website includes:
- An interactive map of the East Riding which people can use to plot their recommendations for locations for new EV charging points
- Information about the £100,000 project
- Details about the Government’s LEVI fund
- New phases and projects as they are announced
- Facts and website links, including a video about the range of electric vehicles available
The results of the consultation will be used by the council to prioritise the installation of EV charging points where they are needed the most. All locations suggested by the public will be subject to feasibility in terms of cost, consultation, power grid capacity and ensuring there is an even fair and equitable distribution across the authority.
The feedback will also be used to shape how the council will use potential LEVI funding across the East Riding, to best support local motorists. Any recommended locations not chosen as part of this project will be taken forward as potential sites for any forthcoming LEVI scheme.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “With the launch of this website we want to capture our residents’ opinions on where they would like to see public EV charging points and where they are needed most. As we expand our infrastructure to prepare for more electric vehicles on our roads, we want to hear from people who might not have access to their own charging points and may rely on public chargers, or where would be the most convenient sites for all motorists to charge up.
“Electric vehicles are our future and we need to prepare for how widespread they will become and promote the benefits of driving them.” The council has joined forces to create the new site with Commonplace, a web-based consultation platform.
