Reece Lyne has kicked off The Daily Grind to give people ‘proper coffee and a place to relax’

A former England and Hull FC rugby player who pitched an idea for opening a coffee shop in the city has seen the venture come to fruition. Reece Lyne and his pal and business partner Callum Taylor are into the fourth week of running the Daily Grind, in Holderness Road.
Hull-born Reece, 33, played for Ideal Isberg Rugby Club during his formative years and joined Hull FC in 2010. He moved on to Wakefield Trinity and has represented England in the sport.
Still playing rugby part-time, Reece, a former pupil of David Lister School, decided the time was right for tackling another challenge. He said: “It’s something a bit different.
“We thought it was somewhere for people to get away from the daily grind – hence the title of the coffee shop – and to just relax and enjoy themselves. We thought there wasn’t something like this on the east side of Hull, we decided Holderness Road would be a good place.”
Reece said the feedback from customers was positive. “We’re happy at how things are going and we are going to build on that.”
The Daily Grind is “more about the coffee” than anything else, but does serve cakes and sweet bakes as well as a few savoury options. “Our speciality coffee is from Wakefield; no one else will be using this type of beans in this area.
“We very much want to provide something for the local community. We’re situated near East Park and the Woodford Leisure Centre and we’re handy for people who are visiting there. There are the park runners on a Saturday morning, for example.”
The Daily Grind decor has been designed with a dark, rustic, low-light mood – “we have a really relaxing feel in there” – and can seat 24 inside and 20 outside. “People do like sitting outside and watching the world go by,” Reece said.
“We have wi-fi as well so people can come in and work. I think we’ve created a really nice atmosphere.
“Callum is looking after the barista side of things and we’ve hired staff. It all seems to be working smoothly.”
The Daily Grind is at 559 Holderness Road. It is currently open from Tuesday to Sunday, 7.30am to 4pm, but after requests from the local community, it will be trialling Monday opening from 10am to 2pm, from July, when the other daily hours will change to 8am to 4pm.
