Willie Peters has challenged Hull KR to become more ruthless for the full 80 minutes as they prepare to host Leigh Leopards in a crucial Super League clash under the lights tonight.
Adrian Lam’s side travel to Sewell Group Craven Park within touching distance of the play-offs in seventh spot, while the Robins edged a 20-16 victory in the reverse fixture just last month.
That result remains Leigh’s only defeat in their last six matches, while Hull KR returned to winning ways with a 38-6 home victory over York Knights.
However, Peters has challenged his side to be more clinical heading into the Round 15 fixture.
“I think there were some opportunities in that game, or there was an opportunity in that game to put more pressure on York,” Peters reflected.
“Obviously, whether we score more points or not, that dictates a lot or determines how ruthless you are.
“A little one for me was the last play of the game when we had an opportunity to get a repeat set. We wouldn’t have got the ball back but for me, it doesn’t matter whether it’s the first minute of the game or the last minute of the game – we need to make that tackle. That’s a little sign for me there.
“Also, the amount of errors that we came up with in that second half – our completion was at 52 per cent.
“As I said, it’s the little moments in and around what I spoke about before that let you know when your side’s ruthless.
“For me, it’s an individual thing. Obviously, if you have too many individuals doing the same actions, then it’s collective. We’ve spoken about that.
“We’re always looking for improvement. That’s the improvement for us from last week.”
Meanwhile, Peters admits he has a selection headache on his hands, with fierce competition for places in his forward pack for the remainder of the campaign.
Tevita Pangai Junior made a strong start to life at the club from the interchange bench on debut last time out, while Jai Whitbread was named 18th man before featuring for the reserves.
Starting prop Sauaso Sue also returns from a one-match suspension and is expected to line up alongside Tom Amone, creating a battle for places on the bench.
“Look at last week, we had Jai Whitbread that didn’t make the team, and he’s been in the team over the last two or three years,” Peters said when discussing competition for places among his forwards.
“It’s a part of the job I don’t enjoy, as I’ve said before. It’s not enjoyable telling players they’re not in, but especially players that can make this team or other teams.
“But it’s a good position to be in, I’m not complaining, that’s for sure.”
