Sherbutt House in Pocklington
A care home devoted to “putting people at the heart of everything they do” is celebrating after being graded as ‘Outstanding’ at its latest inspection. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has upgraded the rating of Sherbutt House in Pocklington from Good to Outstanding, following an inspection in March.
Run by founder Linda Woodhead and manager Gillian Lilley, it provides accommodation and personal care for up to 19 people, including support for autistic people and those with a learning disability. The inspection was carried out as part of CQC’s continual checks on the safety and quality of adult social care services.
The CQC has rated the service as outstanding for being caring and well-led, and good for being safe, responsive and effective.
Alison Chilton, deputy director of operations in the North East region, said: “When we inspected Sherbutt House, we found an exceptional service where staff and leaders worked hard to provide the best possible care. Kind and caring staff understood people’s needs and went the extra mile to ensure they were happy, content and fully supported.
“People told us they were very happy living at the home and had great relationships with staff. We saw staffing was organised and tailored to people’s needs. For instance, one person had a staff member who had been specifically employed and matched to support them to attend a regular activity they enjoyed.
“Relatives gave overwhelmingly positive feedback and told us the home had helped their loved ones thrive. For example, one relative told us their loved one had become calmer and more able to manage stressful situations since living at the home.

“Friendly and caring staff supported people to attend a wide range of community activities to help promote their physical activity and wellbeing. Many people used the local leisure centre and some enjoyed walking and playing tennis. The home also took part in an annual care home Olympics event which everyone loved.
“Leaders and staff should be very proud of the findings in this report. It’s clear the service was committed to treating people as individuals and empowering them to achieve their goals and lead fulfilling lives. Other services should look to this report to see if there’s anything to learn from it.”
Manager Gillian Lilley said the team is absolutely delighted with the upgraded rating. She told how the achievement means so much to everyone at Sherbutt House because it reflects the dedication, compassion, and hard work that the team demonstrates every single day.

They take the time to really get to know each individual, understand what matters to them, and support them to achieve their goals, maintain their independence, and stay connected with their local community.
“Our team doesn’t just provide care; they build genuine relationships with the people who live here and their families. Whether it’s supporting someone to take part in activities they enjoy, helping them develop new skills, celebrating special occasions, or simply being there with kindness and patience when needed, our staff always put people at the heart of everything they do.
“This award belongs to every member of the Sherbutt House team. I feel incredibly privileged to lead such a caring, committed, and professional group of people, and I would like to thank our residents, their families, and the wider community for their continued support.
