53 Yorkshire and the Humber schools to receive grants

More than 1,000 Hull students are set to benefit from a major Government cash pot to improve schools in the area. The Wilberforce College in Hull, which has more than 1,300 pupils, is set to receive a welcome boost from Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) grants, which forms part of a programme to deliver grants worth more than £450m across 684 schools and sixth-form colleges.
The money is set to be used to help to replace heating systems, mend roofs and update electrical works, among other projects, after years of declining buildings. The funding forms part of a wider package of investment in programmes including the School Rebuilding Programme which is rebuilding and refurbishing 66 schools in Yorkshire and the Humber.
In all, 53 schools in Yorkshire and the Humber will benefit from more funding. Alongside Wilberforce College, four schools and colleges in Scunthorpe – Winterton Community Academy, Alkborough Primary Academy, Burton-Upon-Stather Primary Academy and the Engineering UTC Northern Lincolnshire, which collectively have more than 1,100 students – are also set to benefit.
The programmes form part of a 10-year plan to renew buildings across the UK education estate, and are designed to make sure children can learn in classrooms fit for purpose , in high-quality and inspiring school buildings.
The Government said that, by improving classrooms, it is providing the opportunities children need to succeed in education and prepare for future careers.
Schools Minister, Josh MacAlister said: “Opportunity for our children starts with a great education, and children can only learn well in buildings that are safe, warm and fit for purpose – not classrooms disrupted by leaking roofs, failing boilers and declining buildings.
“This funding will help schools tackle urgent issues before they become bigger and more costly problems.
“It is part of our longer-term plan to break the cycle of schools and colleges doing patch-and-mend repairs, by committing to unprecedented long-term funding to improve the school and college estate – because world-class classrooms are key in helping children to achieve and thrive.”
The CIF programme is one part of the Government’s investment of over £2.1 billion in funding for this year to improve the condition of schools. It is also pledging investment of at least £3.7bn between 2025 and 2030 to support councils in providing places for children and young people with SEND or who require alternative provision, and to improve the accessibility and inclusivity of mainstream settings.
