City’s talismanic striker had one final moment of magic in a season full of them

Oli McBurnie admits it was written in the stars that he would pop up and score the winning goal to seal a sensational promotion to the Premier League for Hull City.
McBurnie tucked home the winning goal in the 95th minute at Wembley against Middlesbrough, to cap a remarkable season for City, who were written off by many before a ball was kicked.
The striker took his tally to 19 for the season, with unarguably his most important, which sees the Tigers return to the Premier League after an absence of 10 years.

“For the first time ever, I think I am speechless. Listen, it’s been a long, hard season and I think that game summed us up,” the Scotland star said,
“We’ve had a game this year where we’ve had more of the ball than the opposition. It was tough out there with the heat, and Middlesbrough are a top, top team, and we knew we were going to be right up against it.
“We felt we were going to have one chance, and it was written for me to get it. I didn’t think it would be like that late on, but what a feeling.”
McBurnie’s decision to join City in the summer surprised many, but after scoring the goal to get the Tigers promoted, and he says the dressing room he went into was key to the success they’ve had.
“I knew I was going into a dressing room with winners. If you surround yourself with enough winners, you are going to win,” he continued.
“When things get tough, you look around, and you have 10 other men who you really want to go to war with and fight with. That’s what it was out there. At times, I was knackered, but the lads were giving me that extra little bit.
“There are games this season where people will be wondering how we’ve won a game, a bit like today, but it is down to the character of the boys in the dressing room. I can’t speak highly enough of them.”
