Hampshire made his debut for the Robins on Thursday night
Ryan Hampshire deserved the opportunity to step into the Hull KR halves and partner Mikey Lewis on Thursday night, says Willie Peters.
Hampshire joined the Robins at the start of April on a short-term deal after a successful trial period with the club and after impressing in training and with the reserves, he got the opportunity to make is debut for the Robins against his former side Wigan Warriors.
The 31-year-old came into the side in place of Tyrone May, who was left out due to a minor knock, and he took his opportunity in what was his first senior run out since leaving Featherstone Rovers at the end of the 2025 season.
He wasn’t the cleanest defensively but he tried to make things happen with the ball in hand and he ensured that May’s presence wasn’t missed in the 62-4 win.
“He’s come in and trained really well,” Peters said on Hampshire, who probably wouldn’t have expected to feature so soon into his KR career.
“I always talk around what players do at training is really important, obviously people don’t see that, and what they do in games, whether they play reserves or not.
“How he’s trained and what he’s done against the first team has been impressive. He’s experienced and with Arthur [Mourgue] going down, Jack [Broadbent] is our full-back, so Rocky can play in both positions.
” It was important to get him in the with team tonight. We wanted to give him a chance to play.”
