Cartwright was relieved of huis duties by Hull FC last month

Former Hull FC head coach John Cartwright has been appointed head coach of Catalans Dragons until the end of the Super League season.

Cartwright was relieved of his duties by Hull last month following an up and down start to the season with former Catalans boss Steve McNamara set to pick up the reins at the MKM Stadium from 2027.

He spent one full season in East Yorkshire, but he will now be working in Perpignan, with the head coach stepping straight back into the action.

He’ll take charge of his first Catalans game this weekend against York Knights at the Stade Gilbert Brutus and the Dragons will be looking to bounce back to winning ways after being thrashed 58-10 by Wakefield Trinity on Friday night.

He takes over with the club in eighth, two points above his former side Hull FC and four points short of the current play-off pace.

“I am really looking forward to the rest of the season with Catalans,” Cartwright said upon his appointment.

“It came totally out of the blue which makes it all the more exciting. Can’t thank Bernard enough for this opportunity.”

Catalans have been without a head coach since Joel Tomkins left the club earlier this season, with assistant coach Ryan Sheridan taking the reins. Sheridan remains at the club and he will assist Cartwright alongside Micky McIlorum and Mitchell Pearce.

What Cartwright’s future holds beyond the end of the season is still uncertain. However, he looks set to help Catalans plan for the future as they look to move beyond what has been difficult period for the club and recruit well.
