She also caused problems at Tesco Express
A heavy-drinking woman who regularly downed a bottle of vodka every day repeatedly caused problems at Hull Royal Infirmary by suddenly becoming aggressive and violent towards staff. Regular troublemaker Carol Williams also found herself in nasty confrontations with police and shop staff that also quickly turned violent.
She threatened to slit one man’s face open with a key after one disturbance at the hospital, Hull Crown Court heard. Williams, 69, of Sinclair Crescent, east Hull, but recently in custody on remand, was convicted by Beverley magistrates in her absence of two offences of assaulting emergency workers on March 26 last year.
Williams admitted two similar offences and another of assault on May 28 last year. She also admitted assault on June 16 last year as well as assaulting an emergency worker and racially aggravated threatening behaviour on August 10 last year.
Poppy Walker, prosecuting, said that Williams went to Hull Royal Infirmary in the early hours of March 26 last year. Staff knew her because of previous incidents of her going there after drinking and being asked to leave.
Staff took a bottle of vodka from her and security officers told her that she would be removed if she did not leave. They took her by her arm and escorted her to a bus stop but she threatened to smash their heads in.
Williams kicked one guard on his shin and she continued to be abusive. She again kicked him on his shin three or four times.
They helped her to a bench but she pulled out a key and warned: “I will slit your face open.” Williams behaved erratically and aggressively while being taken to a police vehicle and she kicked a police officer on his leg.
On May 28 last year, she went to Tesco Express in King Edward Street, Hull – where she was banned because of previous incidents – and was told by the manager that she could not have the cider that she was holding. She began shouting and hit a security guard on the chest with a closed fist before leaving.
Police were alerted and Williams was found nearby. She was aggressive towards police and told a female officer: “You’re not searching me, you b***h.”
She threatened to headbutt the officer and kicked her twice on the shin. She kicked out at another female officer, kicking her on her thigh and swearing. On the way to custody, she continued to be aggressive and abusive.
On June 16 last year, Williams went to Hull Royal Infirmary and stayed there all day before being asked to leave just before 11pm. The same security officer who was involved in the first hospital incident tried to escort her out but she refused to go, waved her arms about and kicked him on his leg.
“She continued to be abusive while being escorted to a police vehicle,” said Miss Walker. On August 10, she was again at the hospital but refused to leave after being discharged.
She was abusive to security staff and hurled racial abuse. Police were called and they tried to handcuff her but she hurled abuse. She kicked an officer on his shin and continued to be aggressive.
“She kicked him a further four times to his legs, causing no injury,” said Miss Walker. Williams had convictions for 33 previous offences, including assaulting police, assault, harassment, shop theft and breaching a restraining order and suspended sentences.
Julia Baggs, mitigating, said that Williams did not go to the hospital just to cause trouble and she had medical difficulties at the time. The problems came after incidents with other staff.
She had suffered the deaths of two husbands and a son. She had been in custody since February 24 as well as between June 18 and July 21 last year.
Williams was jailed for 10 months but, because of her time in custody, she was expected to be released shortly.
