Evans has turned his life around after a tough period.
Former Hull FC prop Kane Evans has announced he is 100 days sober after battling addiction and sleeping rough in Sydney parks – and is now set to try his hand at a new sport.
The Sydney-born prop signed for the Black and Whites ahead of the 2022 season and was released midway through 2023, returning to Australia and playing regional rugby league. He also opened a coffee shop in the city, but unfortunately, that venture closed permanently in 2025, with Evans, after a period in rehab, now turning his life around.
A 131-game front row forward in the NRL, Evans played for the Sydney Roosters, Parramatta Eels, and NZ Warriors before joining Hull. He was also a 13-time Fiji international and played in the Ron Massey Cup for Glebe Dirty Reds in 2024.
However, after dropping down from first grade, Evans faced periods of homelessness and addiction, but he is now 100 days sober and in a good place once again, even visiting those places where he slept rough last year.
“What a way to be humbled and feel grateful by waking up early and walking to go visit where I was not so long ago,” Evans posted to his Instagram page. “Four months ago, I slept in these parks and moved in the shadows.
“Tired of fighting the war within, I was hoping to pass away before getting the help I needed. I thank God that I got there with help from many.
“To all those who housed me, looked out for me and prayed for me. Thank you. I love you. 100 days sober.”
The post got plenty of interaction from former NRL players, including Hull KR back rower Clint Newton, who wrote: “You are crushing it, mate. Keep going. You’ve got many more chapters to write.”
Evans is now working in the scaffolding trade, working on construction sites within the Sydney region and is looking healthy again.
“I can’t articulate how hard and rewarding it was checking myself into rehab in order to find understanding, self-love, healing, growth and purpose,” Evans posted.
“Letting go of all the energy that didn’t belong to me set me free. I am humbled and grateful. Thank you, God, and my loved ones.”
And as for his next venture into sport, Evans will be a competitor in Australia’s new boxing competition, World Bare Knuckle Fighting.
He added: “I’m very blessed for the opportunity and I can’t wait to throw some hands.”
