The 53-year-old army veteran and charity worker died in hospital earlier this week

Five people have been charged with murder following the tragic death of Martin Chadburn. The 53-year-old army veteran and charity worker died in hospital on Tuesday after a “serious assault” in Hull city centre in the early hours of Sunday, April 19.

The five accused of his murder were initially arrested on Monday. A 49-year-old woman who was arrested on Sunday was released on conditional bail.

Humberside Police have confirmed that Britney Naylor, 20, of Dibsdane, Hull, Bethany Naylor, 20, of Deerhurst Grove, Hull, Shaytiya Farrow, 21, of Peter Street, Blackpool, Kristjan Suits, 34, of Queens Road, Hull, and Lukasz Matusiak, 27, of Needlers Way, Hull, have each been charged with murder. All five were remanded into custody to appear at Hull Magistrates’ Court this morning (April 23).

Following the incident in the area of Queen Victoria Square at around 3.40am on Sunday, a cordon was put in place while police conducted their enquiries.

Following Martin’s death, his family paid tribute to the “much-loved brother, twin, uncle, friend and colleague” whose passing “has left an immeasurable loss in the hearts of all who knew and loved him”. They added: “Martin was truly one of life’s great characters – warm, loyal, funny and full of spirit. He was the life and soul of any gathering and had a rare gift for making people feel welcome.”

Martin’s family said that, as a young man, he joined the British Army alongside close friends and “served his country with pride, including active service overseas”. In recent years, he worked for Hull 4 Heroes as a development officer. The charity’s CEO, Paul Matson, also paid tribute saying: “It is extremely difficult to put into words how profoundly shocked and saddened we are at the loss of our colleague and friend, Martin Chadburn.

“Martin – a veteran of nine years’ service – has been a part of Hull 4 Heroes since day one, first as a volunteer and then as an employee. To say he embodied the spirit and values of the charity is an understatement. Martin was the type of person who would drop everything to help anyone and during his time with Hull 4 Heroes, he made a real and positive difference to the lives of many veterans and former military personnel.

“He will be greatly missed by us all and we would like to offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
