‘His little boy, Billy, will now grow up without ever knowing his amazing dad, something no child should have to face’
The heartbroken family of a popular and “much loved” young father – who died following a horrific road crash just three weeks after his baby son was born – has paid an emotional tribute to him. The tragic death of Callan Towle, 24, of Hull, was even more poignant because he had only just become a “daddy” so recently.
He was the front seat passenger in a car which hit a telegraph pole in Fieldsend Lane, Burton Pidsea, Holderness, on September 10, 2023. Two other passengers in the back seats were injured.
The family of Mr Towle has spoken of the terrible loss after the driver of the car in which he was a passenger was cleared, after a trial at Hull Crown Court, of causing the death of Mr Towle by careless driving. The motorist was also cleared of causing serious injury to two rear-seat passengers by careless driving.
The prosecution claimed that the driver, 27, from Beverley, momentarily lost control of his black VW Polo while driving along with three passengers, all of them his friends, just before 8pm.
It was claimed that he lost control of the car on a wide left ‘S’ bend heading west out of Burton Pidsea, on a “windy country road”. The driver clipped the wing mirror of an oncoming car.
The driver of the other car had to swerve onto the grass verge to avoid the VW Polo. The rear end of the latter went into the opposite lane before the vehicle was sent spinning and hit a telegraph pole, it was claimed.
The pole was knocked down because of the sheer force of the crash. Mr Towle was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary but he did not survive the crash. Two rear seat passengers – one male and the other female – were seriously injured.
The family of Mr Towle said in its statement: “Callan was a much loved son, brother, uncle and daddy, and a friend to so many. He was kind, caring and brought so much warmth and laughter to those around him.
“Our whole world was ripped apart that night and he has left a huge Callan-shaped hole in all our hearts as well as in the hearts of our family and friends. After two-and-a-half years of pain and waiting, we can finally begin to grieve properly as a family.
“Nothing will ever make up for what we have really lost. He had been a daddy for three weeks when his life was taken.
“His little boy, Billy, will now grow up without ever knowing his amazing dad, something no child should have to face. We will carry Callan with us always and he will never be forgotten.”
