Hull City currently sit four points clear of seventh place in the Championship table

Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic believes six more points could be enough to secure a play-off spot this season.

The Tigers currently sit in fifth, two points clear of Southampton in sixth and more importantly, four points above Wrexham, who currently occupy seventh spot in the Championship table.

An automatic promotion spot isn’t off the table either with City sitting just four points behind the pace prior to last night’s clash between Millwall and West Bromwich Albion.

Jakirovic rightly hasn’t given up on a top two spot, but he believes that just a couple of wins would be enough to get over the line in the play-off race.

“There’s no more space, it’s five games to go and maybe we need I think six points to reach the play-offs,” the head coach said. “Of course, if you can reach more but I think Ipswich has the advantage there because they have two games in hand and it’s not easy to catch them.

“It’s very tight, four points from seventh and five points from second, it’s game by game but we have to look at ourselves and if we win the points, I don’t care about the others.

“I can say that I expected Southampton in this position because since the beginning of the season, they had a difficult start, but you know we are the last team to beat Southampton in the last 16 games.

“I think when they had that away game against Leicester and they were down 3-0 and they turned it around, this game that was for them a big confidence boost and they start to play good. This is a good team, if you asked before the season where Southampton would be, you’d say top three.

“We are depending just on ourselves, and if we win the points we are good.”

Of course, a City win this afternoon at Sheffield United would go a long way towards securing that coveted play-off spot.

The Blades haven’t picked up a win since February, but Jakirovic believes they have been unfortunate at times, with the club in something of a false position.

“If you look at expected goals they would be in the top six, 100 per cent,” the Tigers boss added. “They create a lot of chances and a lot of shots. Some games they have been unlucky but in the Championship you must have a little bit of luck.

“We know everything about Sheffield United, they know everything about us. It’s a Yorkshire derby, a nice stadium, nice atmosphere, we have everything to have a big performance there.”
