Reform will be looking for its first Hull councillors in May

Nigel Farage has said he thinks Reform UK can do “very very well” in Hull’s upcoming council elections. One third of Hull City Council is up for grabs on May 7.

Currently, the Guildhall is dominated by Liberal Democrat and Labour councillors, with a handful of independents. Mr Farage‘s Reform UK, which leads the national polls, will be hoping to win its first Hull councillors when people go to the polls in May. All of Hull’s wards except Kingswood and Ings will be electing a councillor.

On Monday, Reform returned to Hull’s Connexin Live where a year ago, Luke Campbell was named as the party’s Mayoral candidate. This year the party used the event to bring on stage their candidates for each of the 19 wards set to head to the polls.

The ‘rally’ was kicked-off by political commentator and GB News regular, Charlie Rowley. Mayor Campbell and Mr Farage both also spoke at the event.

Due to current national polling and the party’s result in last year’s Mayoral election, which saw the former Olympic boxer being named as Hull and East Yorkshire’s first Mayor, Reform would seem to be confident going into May’s election. Ahead of the Connexin Live event, Hull Live sat down with Mr Farage and asked what does success look like for Reform in Hull and how many seats, if any, would be a good result?

Mr Farage said: “I think we can do very very well and win a good number. A really really good number.”

Reform won’t be the only party hoping to disrupt the current political weighting of Hull City Council. The Green Party will be fielding a councillor in each ward for the first time. The party is set to reveal its candidates this week.

Hull City Council’s current political weighting is as follows:

  • 29 – Liberal Democrats
  • 23 – Labour Party
  • 5 – Independent (3 of which form an Independent Group led by Cllr Wareing)
