
The animal was safely rescued and returned to the wild
Humberside Fire and Rescue Service had an unusual callout to deal with this week when a wild deer became stuck in a garden pond. A crew from Hull’s Calvert Lane Fire Station went to the aid of the deer that had wandered into the 5ft-deep pond at Well Lane, Willerby.
The emergency service posted about the incident and shared a number of pictures of the morning rescue. The post said: “Thanks to their quick work, the deer was safely rescued and returned to the wild.
“Great teamwork and a happy ending for this unexpected visitor!” A Humberside Fire and Rescue Service log of the incident said the report of the deer stuck in a garden pond at Well Lane, Willerby, had come in just after 8.30am on Wednesday, March 18.
The log said: “Rescued by fire service personnel and released back into wild. Water rescue equipment in use.”
A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: “On March 18 at 8.30am, we were called to a deer that had become trapped in a five‑foot‑deep garden pond in Willerby. We sent one fire engine and our crew was on scene for around 30 minutes.
“Using specialist water rescue equipment, our firefighters were able to safely rescue the deer out of the pond. This incident is a reminder that our firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies.
“Alongside fires, our firefighters carry out rescues involving animals, vehicles, water, mud and many more to keep our communities safe.” The post about the rescue brought messages of praise from the public.
One person said: “Thank you for saving this beautiful animal, well done to you all.” Another said: “Well done lads, good job done, deer happy to be out, I bet.”
Other comments included: “Awwww bless the little angel, great work everyone”; “Well done to all the firefighters you’re all amazing”; “Thankyou for all you do xxx what a feeling” and a simple “Great work”.
