Hull KR recently set an unwanted record start to their new season.
Hull KR have gone back to basics after their Las Vegas hammering, with the Robins determined to finally kickstart their Super League campaign away to Huddersfield Giants.
The champions have made an unwanted slice of history – becoming the first defending Super League champions in a decade to lose their opening two games of the new season.
That slow start comes despite Rovers’ stunning victory over Brisbane Broncos in the World Club Challenge just a week after the campaign began.
Head coach Willie Peters has demanded an immediate response at the Accu Stadium on Sunday – admitting his side’s defence has fallen well short of the standards that powered last year’s historic success.
Rovers boasted the best defence in Super League across 2025, conceding an average of just 10 points per game across 27 regular-season rounds. That platform helped deliver the League Leaders’ Shield, while also enjoying famous triumphs at Wembley and Old Trafford.
But Peters insists the focus now is on fixing the basics.
“When you have a loss like we did on the weekend – and it was a heavy loss, we don’t shy away from that – it’s important we focus on the little areas that we want to get right,” he said.
“As long as you get those right, you can build blocks to where you want to get to.
“We need to simplify it. It’s important to go back to what we do well and the areas that we pride ourselves on – which is competing, effort and our defence.
“We’ve lacked in those areas, certainly last weekend. Our defence is nowhere near where it needs to be, so that’s certainly an area we want to focus on. For me this weekend, it’s about tightening that defence up again and competing on every play.
“We pride ourselves on making it difficult for teams to score. When you let in 50-odd points, you need to own it and not shy away from it defensively. I know we only scored one try, but I do know once we get our defence right, the points come on the back of that.”
