He was attacked in prison last week
Durham Constabulary has confirmed there is no change to Ian Huntley’s condition. The convicted child killer remains in hospital after being struck over the head last Thursday.
The alleged primary suspect has been identified as triple murderer Anthony Russell, though this is yet to be confirmed by police and prison authorities. Huntley was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary after the attack in Frankland Prison workshop on Thursday, and has been in an induced coma since, reports Chronicle Live.
Today, a spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “There has been no change in the 52-year-old man’s condition overnight – he remains in hospital in a serious condition.”
Huntley, who was born in Grimsby, is serving a life sentence for murdering 10-year-old girls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire in 2002, when he was the caretaker at their school. Prior to Thursday’s attack, he had been attacked twice during his 24 years behind bars.
Yesterday, it was reported that Huntley came perilously close to losing his life. “He was placed in an induced coma because he was so close to death,” a source said. “The team from the helicopter travelled with him but he could not be evacuated by air in case of any complications.
“He was transported by road because he was in a coma; this helps to keep him stable. The helicopter then travels to the hospital to collect the medics. Two armed officers are guarding Huntley around the clock at the hospital.”
