A sexual health clinic has officially opened its new drop-in centre in Old Town. Lord Mayor Cheryl Payne and Young Lord Mayor Eunice cut the ribbon at MESMAC on 8 King Street in Trinity Square on Valentine’s Day.
The free service, which supports young people, sex workers, the LGBT community, and BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) groups, has been promoted on social media by Traitors star Jessie Stride, also known as Jessie Roux.
At the opening of the charity’s new premises, free cupcakes and goodie bags were handed out. There was also entertainment by the Scarlett Sirens.
MESMAC, which has 11 staff and a dedicated body of volunteers, was previously based in Freetown Way for more than 10 years. Since moving to its new home near Trinity Market, staff have seen increased footfall.
Melanie Clark, MESMAC Local Services Coordinator, said there is unfortunately still some stigma surrounding sexual health, but encouraged those who want help or advice to get in touch.
She said: “Turn up at our door, you will always be treated in a completely non-judgemental way. We are very friendly.
“There is nothing we have not seen before, and no questions are silly questions. We always want to help and break down barriers for people around sexual health.”
The charity provides most contraception, including the DEPO injection and implant. The exception is IUD fittings, such as the Mirena coil, which have to be done in a more clinical setting.
It is open as a drop-in six days a week, Monday to Saturday. There are also bookable appointments which can be accessed through the MESMAC website.
