Brett Rogers and Lee Wise run a paranormal podcast called Beyond The Veil

Two Hull men have set up a podcast delving into the mystery of people’s paranormal experiences, whether or not they are sceptics or believers. Beyond The Veil, available on all major platforms, has a deliberate focus on local tales.

Brett Rogers, who describes himself and co-host Lee Wise as “Hull born and bred”, said their aim is “shining a light on local hauntings, regional history, and the experiences of people who live and work in these places every day”.

Explaining how they came up with the idea, Brett told Hull Live: “We have always had a healthy interest in the paranormal. Some people really obsess over it, don’t they? But we are just fascinated by the idea of it.

“We went away one time for my birthday – me and a load of friends – and for a bit of fun we told spooky stories like you would around a campfire. And we kind of creeped ourselves out with it and we had a really good laugh.

“That’s how the idea of the podcast came around. Why don’t we do a podcast just doing this, telling stories, and see if we can get people sending their stories in?”

Beyond The Veil was formed, with the aim of sharing real-life ghost experiences or other unexplained phenomena. Anyone can submit a tale, so long as it is genuine and not fiction.

The mystery of what happens after death is one of the main draws of ghost stories, said Brett. He said he thinks this is “purely because it is one of the last few things we don’t have a definitive answer to.”

He added: “Everyone has an opinion on it. But we still don’t know definitively if there is something more that goes on after death or anything like that, strictly talking about ghosts or spirits.

“Everyone has genuinely had something happen to them that they can’t truly explain. Even if they are a believer or not.”

Beyond the Veil episodes range from around 90 minutes long, to nearly three hours for their special interview with William C Grave, whose notoriously haunted house was the subject of his book ‘The Lady In The Bay Window’.

New episodes are uploaded every month. Brett said they have many exciting things planned for future episodes, including hauntings and strange experiences experienced by Hull students.

Brett added: “Recently, we’ve had the pleasure of speaking with Hull historian and paranormal researcher Mike Covell, exploring the city’s history and some of its most talked-about haunted locations.

“We’ve also recorded an episode from Sheffield’s infamous number 333 with William C Grave, author of The Lady in the Bay Window, continuing our focus on authentic stories and lived experience rather than sensationalism.

“We are also looking forward to working closely with the University of Hull Horror Society to engage with students on some of the experiences they may have had.”
