The Tigers are one of the league’s form teams and continue to catch the eye

Former Sunderland promotion winner Kevin Phillips has praised the job Sergej Jakirovic has done at Hull City, with the Tigers firmly in the thick of the Championship promotion race.

Saturday’s win over Swansea City was their third in the space of a week and saw the Tigers open a seven-point gap to the chasing pack below the play-offs.

Jakirovic’s City have won eight of their last 11 in the Championship and are just five points off the top two, with a game in hand on Middlesbrough.

That form has impressed Phillips, and so too have the goals plundered by Oli McBurnie after the striker netted his 11th Championship strike of the season on Saturday, against his former club.

“What’s impressed me with Hull (City) is the new manager coming in, even with the transfer embargo restrictions,” he told BestBettingSites. “When I look at the team, there are no real big stars that stand out. They look like they’ve got a real good togetherness. And, they’ve got a striker in Oli McBurnie. He’s been around. He knows where the back of the net is. And again, he’s like an old-fashioned type, centre forward, like (Brian) Brobbey (Sunderland striker). He likes to go up against people, likes to be aggressive.”

City’s form has been consistent throughout the campaign, and Phillips says he likes the balance of Jakirovic’s side, coupled with the leaders in the squad, like John Egan, McBurnie, Lewie Coyle and John Lundstram.

“But I think they’ve got their consistency,” Phillips continued. “And, when I look at it, the balance of the team is really good. They’ve got pace in the wide area. They’ve got leaders in the team, and they’ve got ball players as well. So, I think the balance of the side and not having people who are big names standing out. They’ve just got a good, solid squad that’s performed really, really well. So for me, it’s the consistency that the manager brought to the team.”
