City claimed another superb victory on the road
Hull City made it four wins and a draw from their last five on the road to beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s, and move back into the Championship’s top six.
Striker Kyle Joseph’s quick thinking from Oli McBurnie’s lay-off gave City the lead after only 20 minutes and that advantage was doubled 13 minutes later when Charlie Hughes rose to head in Amir’s corner to the back post.
Ross Stewart prodded in from close range to pull the hosts back into a game they looked out of for long periods, but City defended their box well in the closing stages and earned a deserved league double over the Saints.
Here’s how Tigers reporter Barry Cooper rated the players on the South Coast on Saturday afternoon….
Ivor Pandur: Made a fine early save to deny Adam Armstrong, spilt one at the back post, but did enough and then pushed away a shot from Harwood-Bellis. Didn’t have much to do in the second half, but was calm. 8/10
Akin Famewo: Stuck to his task well at left-back in the continued absence of Ryan Giles, and did was required in the first half. Came off at half-time. 7/10
Charlie Hughes: Good block on the line early on and then his terrific header made it two. Was booked for a crunching tackle on Scienza before the break. Caught out by Stewart who pulled one back. Made some fine tackles. Really good afternoon. Gets the extra mark for the goal. 9/10
John Egan: Timely intervention in the opening few minutes, and then blocked well on the line. Barely put a foot wrong alongside Hughes all afternoon. 8.5/10
Lewie Coyle: Dependable and solid in the first half against Manning. He was booked for a tackle on him that he needed to make. A captain’s shift. 8/10
Regan Slater: Covered plenty of ground in the middle of the park, but was disciplined in what he needed to do. Ended the game at right-back. 8/10
Amir Hadziahmetovic: Like his partner in crime, Amir was controlled in what he did. And his excellent delivery was headed in by Hughes. A really calm, and assured display. 8/10
Kyle Joseph: Unerring finish to put City in front from McBurnie’s lay-off. Doesn’t half cover some ground, does KJ. Could have had a second before he departed early in the second period. A proper shift. 8/10
Liam Millar: Inches away from opening the scoring with a goal-bound header that was well saved and could have had himself a penalty. A threat and outlet out wide left. 7/10
Matt Crooks: Carved out a fine cross to Millar’s head, which was saved. Did what he needed to, being awkward for the opposition and getting in the way. 7/10
Oli McBurnie: Teed up Joseph for the opening goal after pinching it inside the box. Did his fair share of work inside his own box. Ran his socks off, and put in a real shift for the team. 7/10

Subs:
Cathal McCarthy (for Famewo 46): Slotted in comfortably inside the back line for the second half, and did little wrong. Another mature display from the teenager. 7/10
Matty Jacob (for Joseph 53): Came on at left-back and aside from a couple of nervy moments, was solid in the second half with City under pressure. 6/10
John Lundstram (for Millar 76): Back after his latest spell of seven games on the sidelines and it was just good to see him get a useful 20 minutes. 6/10
Joel Ndala (for Coyle 76): Gave away a daft foul outside his box and lost possession which could have been costly. 6/10
David Akintola (for Amir 88): Another interesting cameo from the winger, but his chasing caused them problems and helped City defend in the final moments. 6/10
