A call has gone out from the charity for recruits from across East Yorkshire
National first aid and health response charity, St John Ambulance (SJA), is calling on enthusiastic, community-minded individuals across the East Riding to join its team of lifesaving volunteers. Its winter recruitment campaign follows a successful campaign run in Hull over the summer.
Volunteering with SJA is a flexible and extremely rewarding way to give something back to your local communities, as part of a friendly team of volunteers. It is currently recruiting for two different roles: Emergency Responders and Community Volunteers.
Emergency Responders need no prior experience, as full training will be provided along with a uniform and at no cost to any individual who joins. Successful applicants will play a key role in delivering first aid and emergency care at a wide range of events, both in the local area and also other venues including fixtures at Beverley Races, Scunthorpe Speedway, Barton Bike Night, MKM Stadium, Craven Park and many council-organised events such as Hull Fair.
Emergency Responders are asked to commit to a minimum of 100 hours per year, so the equivalent of just one day a month, but they can decide to do more. SJA is also actively recruiting for Community Volunteers, a role that will suit individuals who would like to support the work of St John locally but have more interest in fundraising, marketing, community engagement projects or perhaps as part of its Fellowship Group.
This team can often be seen making a cuppa, supporting front-line volunteers while on duty, running a cake stall or tombola but who also meet in social settings too. To help prospective volunteers learn more about its community work, SJA plans to host local “Recruitment Events”, with specific dates and locations to be confirmed.
At these events, attendees will have the opportunity to meet local teams, find out more about the types of local events which SJA volunteers at and about the training it provides. As the safety of volunteers and patients is paramount, all volunteers are required to complete a DBS.
Jacky Bowes, county commissioner for SJA, said: “’Volunteering with St John Ambulance is more than just giving your time, it’s about being there for your community in the moments that matter most. Whether you’re volunteering at a local sports fixture, a summer fayre or community engagement events teaching 5 ways to save a life, whatever the event, every shift is a chance to make a real difference.
“We’re looking for people from all walks of life who want to learn new skills, meet new people, and be part of something truly meaningful and hugely fulfilling.” All roles are now live on the national SJA website and can be found at:
