The plans will be discussed this week

Plans for a new drive-thru McDonald’s in east Hull are set to be discussed by Hull City Council‘s planning committee. On Wednesday, January 7, the committee are set to make a decision on the plans which would transform an area of vacant grassland near the Marfleet Roundabout.

Proposals for the site emerged in 2024, following a public consultation. The application is be to discussed at the planning committee after having been called-in by Labour’s Marfleet ward councillor, Patrick Wilkinson.

The application is recommended for approval subject to a legal agreement which involves the applicant financially contributing to alterations to the Marfleet Lane and Preston Road junction following concerns which had been raised by National Highways. Up to 70 full time equivalent staff would be employed on site.

At the time of the public consultation, Annie Newman, senior acquisition surveyor at McDonald’s, said: “The site, located off Hedon Road, is ideally placed to serve residents and visitors in Marfleet. We’re confident that residents and local businesses will recognise the value of greater choice, and the benefits of having a reliable and convenient restaurant from a recognised brand serving food at reasonable prices.”

Vehicular access to the site would come from the south via an existing road on Marfleet Roundabout. The site would include a 28 space car park, including 2 accessible spaces and 2 EV chargers.

Objections have been launched by both the council’s Urban Design and Public Health teams. Whilst the Urban Design objection argues that “more consideration should be given” to pedestrian access points, the Public Health objection states the plans would be contrary to the council’s Local Plan which seeks to prevent hot food takeaways being located within 400 metres of a secondary school / sixth form college, or playing fields.
