City will pop round to their neighbours to spend Boxing Day afternoon

Matt Crooks can’t wait for the Boxing Day meeting between two Yorkshire rivals as Hull City head to Hillsborough to take on stricken Sheffield Wednesday.

Always one of the great traditions in English football, the December 26 fixture is one fans have looked forward to for generations, and Crooks is no different.

While Christmas can be difficult for players with the amount of travelling and being away from friends and family, whilst having to pass on all the foodie goodies, Crooks says he’s pleased to be back at home for the festivities following a spell in the USA.

“You can look at it two ways. You don’t get to see your family as much over the Christmas period, which is what it’s all about, really, isn’t it? Spending time with your family and your loved ones,” he told Hull Live.

“But I do love Boxing Day games, I love it, it’s class. Everyone’s in a good atmosphere, everyone’s in a good mood, everyone’s up for it. I just love it.

“I missed it last year, obviously, I was in America, and that was one of the things I missed, the Boxing Day, Christmastime period, where it’s just game after game after game.

“Can’t have it all, can you? I like it on the football side, personal side, and my wife would probably say she hates it, but there you go. She’s not playing, I am.”

City head to Hillsborough looking to continue their play-off quest and will be backed by a big following in South Yorkshire, and while Wednesday are going down to League One, there will still be a raucous Yorkshire atmosphere awaiting Sergej Jakirovic’s men.

“Sheff Wed away. It’s a proper game, isn’t it? Full stadium, it’ll be nice and cold, it’ll just be proper, won’t it?” Crooks said of the trip to the Steel City.

“It’s always it’s a good atmosphere. We want to play well. We’ll have had a good Christmas, but not too good. We’ve had a couple of turkeys but not too much stuffing. It’s just that time of year where it’s just footy and beers for everyone else and not for us.”
