The Tigers players will be enjoying each other’s company over Christmas

Charlie Hughes says spending much of the Christmas period with his Hull City teammates will be like spending it with family, so close is the bond between the players.

City will have a busy period in training over the festive period as they prepare for the Boxing Day trip to Sheffield Wednesday, closely followed by a trek to Teesside to take on Middlesbrough in an attempt to gain revenge for their 4-1 hammering earlier this month.

The Tigers then face Stoke City at the MKM Stadium on New Year’s Day before rounding off the hectic Christmas spell with the visit of Watford to East Yorkshire three days later.

Traditionally, a time to spend with those close to you, footballers tend to get little such time owing to their intense training schedule and match preparations, but Hughes is relaxed about things this year and admits he’s excited about being in the company of his teammates, especially Joe Gelhardt and Kyle Joseph.

“It’s different, because we don’t really spend it like the rest of the family,” the young defender told Hull Live. “We’re always looking at training and games. I really like it cos you always try and squeeze in the family time that you get, but then also if we’re together around this Christmas period, it’s a close group and lads.

“It’s almost like having a Christmas with all your family, but at football. It’s good because this group’s very tight and close, so I’m looking forward to this year. The group are loving working every day together, so I think this year will be a good one.”
