Flu jabs are being offered to children in Hull in a “last chance” bid to protect young people as cases surge.

Catch-up clinics will be held at The Deep on 17 December from 15:30 to 19:00 GMT and at Priory Road Children’s Centre on 5 January from 09:00 to 15:00.

Cases of the virus in the UK have risen sharply in recent weeks.

Alison Patey, director of public health at Hull City Council, said: “Typically, we see a peak in cases around January, so I would urge anyone who missed the chance in school, or home educates to book an appointment or drop in.”

Ms Patey said: “While getting vaccinated doesn’t completely prevent someone getting flu, it very significantly reduces the chance of them becoming seriously ill.

“These two clinics are an opportunity to make sure children are vaccinated either before schools break up and the festive period truly begins, or as schools go back.”

Parents can either book an appointment for their child to get vaccinated at The Deep Business Centre or walk-in jabs are available between 17:00 and 18:00.

Both appointments and walk-ins are also available at the Priory Road Children’s Centre.

According to the NHS, vaccination prevents millions of deaths worldwide every year.

It said since vaccines were introduced smallpox had been eradicated and polio was reduced to a very low number of cases globally.
