Only Coventry City have scored more goals in the Championship than the Tigers this term

Kyle Joseph has praised the impact of striker Oli McBurnie after the star forward returned from injury in style to help Hull City return to winning ways.

McBurnie missed nine games with a calf injury but has come off the bench in the past two games to put the seal on two vital victories over Wrexham and Millwall with his eighth and ninth strikes of the season so far.

In his absence, Joseph has largely led the line and has netted in his last two games, with one against Wrexham and a seven-minute brace at The Den on Saturday, taking his tally to six for the season.

Despite the pair competing for a place in Sergej Jakirovic’s squad, Joseph says McBurnie has given him an example of how to be a pivotal figure in the dressing room.

“One hundred per cent, the competition’s healthy,” Joseph told Hull Live. “I think probably for the first time in my career, I’ve realised how important the squad is.

“The lads who come out of the team, and lads who come into the team, are just trying to be good teammates to each other. Even like Oli, I think a lot of people probably would have thought for him to start (at Millwall).

“Yesterday, for example, I asked him for just a few tips and stuff like that, and the detail that he goes into, how much he helps me, just to improve little things, it’s massive.

“I think that’s helped me realise how important a squad is in terms of your teammates, being a good teammate to each other. You look at Oli as a player, as a person, the career he’s had scoring so many goals in the Championship. He’s scored in La Liga, played in the Premier League and scored in the Premier League.

“He’s someone that I want to just try and squeeze as much as possible from. He’s an amazing teammate, amazing human being, and I appreciate working with him.”
