New images have been released to show how the station will look once its built
Hull engineering specialist Spencer Rail Engineering is celebrating after scooping a huge contract, to build a new £28.5m railway station.
The consultancy has been appointed to deliver the vital new project in the South East – a brand-new rail station which is key to unlocking the development of a growing community. The business is part of Spencer Group which was launched in 1989 by executive chairman Charlie Spencer, and has over 30 years-experience of delivering projects spanning all rail environments from track works to stations and depots.
The station project will see Spencer Rail Engineering design and construct the rail station to meet the needs of the community in Waterbeach, near Cambridge, which is set to more than double in size, with construction of up to 11,000 new homes already under way.
Spencer Rail Engineering’s teams – who recently played a pivotal part in a £1bn-plus transport project in Canada – will carry out enabling works, minor track works and complete construction of the new station which will include two fully accessible platforms. The works will also include construction of an accessible footbridge, lifts, and improved integration with walking, cycling and bus facilities. The scheme will also include the creation of a new car park with up to 280 spaces to service the station.
Jointly funded by the Greater Cambridge Partnership and Homes England, the new station will be based on the Cambridge to Ely railway line close to the new town, replacing the existing Waterbeach Station which no longer meets the needs of the community.
The project has been hailed for representing an investment in future generations, improving access to skills, education and leisure opportunities, while also playing a key part in the evolution of a new community. Spencer Rail Engineering’s experienced team have started on the design phase of the project, with images showing how it will look. Work is expected to begin next autumn, with construction complete by 2028.
It’s anticipated that the new station will increase passengers using the rail network and also boost the number of people using active transport methods to get to and from the station, thanks to its improved pedestrian and cycling connectivity, reducing traffic on busy local roads.
Senior project manager Matt Lee said: “Spencer Rail Engineering has a strong track record of delivering projects across all rail environments, including at stations, and we’re excited to get started on delivering this project, which is the key to unlocking further development and growth in this area.
“This project requires an excellent working relationship between ourselves, the Greater Cambridge Partnership and wider partners, and a strong collaborative approach, which is something we really pride ourselves on in everything we do.”
Spencer Group recently triumphed as the Best Place to Work – Large Firm winner at the Construction News Workforce Awards.
