Police say one of two men, who went into a river in Hull following a police chase, is believed to have got out of the water.

Humberside Police said officers attempted to stop a car being driven with a defective rear light on Friday evening. It failed to stop and a short pursuit followed to Charlotte Street, where the car crashed into a wall.

Police said two men fled and were believed to have entered the River Hull off Charlotte Street at about 20:30 GMT.

On Tuesday, the force said CCTV footage had led it to believe one of the men exited the water on the opposite side of the the river, near Great Union Street, at about 22:10. The second man remains unaccounted for.

Det Ch Insp Cross said: “Our priority remains the safety and welfare of the two men whose identities are not yet known and they have not been located.”

He added: “Residents will continue to see an increased police presence in and around the area as our investigation progresses.”

Det Ch Insp Cross urged anyone with information to get in touch.

Humberside Police said the vehicle was thought to have been sold recently and was traced back to a 65-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of obstructing the course of public justice. He has been released on bail.

The force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the prior police contact and police pursuit after the vehicle failed to stop.
