The 25-year-old defender continues to impress in Tigers’ colours
Ryan Giles says the key to his resurgence at Hull City is the fact that he’s playing with a smile on his face once again, and it’s contributing to some stellar displays under a manager in Sergej Jakirovic, who is getting the best out of him.
Giles has been one of City’s best and most consistent performers so far this season and is at the top of the assist charts in the Championship with six, five of those coming for Oli McBurnie prior to his injury.
It’s been a stunning turnaround in fortunes for Giles, who openly admits that he didn’t know what the future held for him when he returned to the club at the start of pre-season training, having ended the season in underwhelming fashion at Middlesbrough and significant question marks over his MKM Stadium future.
“I think that’s probably one of the biggest things, really, it’s just I feel like I’m playing with a smile on my face again, and I think that’s been important,” Giles told Hull Live.
“I felt it in pre-season, if I’m being honest, I felt things were working for me. I always felt like I needed that. I think probably a confidence thing with me was massive over the last couple of years, especially.
“Like I said to you before, I had an honest conversation with the gaffer in the summer because at the time, I wasn’t sure what was gonna happen with me, really, if I’m being completely honest.
“I wasn’t sure where my future was, I wasn’t sure what the situation was gonna be and then I had a little situation with my ankle which set me back.
“Then I’m thinking ‘Oh no this, this could go the other way’, now but I’ve had an honest conversation with the gaffer and then, I just thought ‘Let’s just get my head down and let’s just see how we go’ and I like the way the gaffer operates, I like the way he wants his full-backs to play.”
Jakirovic has worked hard to try and get the best out of the Telford-born full-back, and Giles says the freedom with which he’s allowed to operate has been key.
“I think it suits me very well, and I felt that early on,” he said of Jakirovic’s approach. “I just needed something to go for me, I think, whether that be I don’t know, a good delivery and ends in a goal, something or just a few nice deliveries to give me a bit of a lift. I just needed that, and I think I got that relatively early on.
“It’s going well. I’m not gonna take it for granted, it’s still very early days, but, like I always say, if I can just keep ticking them off and from a personal perspective, if I can try and take an assist or something from each game, I’d be absolutely buzzing.
“I’d like to add a goal or two along the way if I could as well, but on the whole, if I reflect from especially 12 months ago, for example, obviously I’m absolutely delighted and long may it continue.”
