His offending ‘went significantly beyond simple possession’ of indecent images, a court heard

A seedy internet pervert helped to fuel the “profound and lasting harm” to vulnerable children by viewing and distributing “terrible” images of child sexual abuse that helped to keep the trade going. Gary Oglesby had a “Secret Photo Vault” of indecent images and his actions “perpetuated” the abuse of children and “went significantly beyond simple possession” of images, Hull Crown Court heard.

Oglesby, 67, of Anlaby Common, admitted six offences of making indecent images of children. He also admitted other offences of distributing indecent images of children and possessing extreme pornography.

Billy Torbett, prosecuting, said that, on February 20, 2024, police received information that an internet user had uploaded indecent images of children and that a mobile phone was linked to the account. After police inquiries, Oglesby was arrested on July 18 of that year.

A mobile phone was seized and his home was searched. A number of devices were found. There was evidence of distribution of indecent images of children between March 2019 and March 2020.

There was one image in the most serious Category A, two in Category B, two in Category C and 13 extreme pornographic images of bestiality. The images were all distributed on WhatsApp.

Phone apps had been used to conceal indecent images and there was a “Secret Photo Vault”. Images were found on other devices dating from September 2009 to January 2010. They included a naked boy aged between three and five in sexual acts.

Oglesby had convictions for three previous offences dating back to 1978 but for different matters.

Jane Rapin, mitigating, said that Oglesby viewed the offences as serious and “terrible” and he realised how wrong the abuse of children was in the making of the images. “He was distraught about the entire incident and the harm that the victims will have been caused in making the images,” said Miss Rapin.

“He has learned a very valuable lesson and he is committed to doing what he can to make sure that he never commits these offences again. He has a realistic prospect of rehabilitation in the community.”

Recorder Taryn Turner said that they were very serious offences and the making of the images involved “real sexual abuse and exploitation” of children, causing “profound and lasting harm” to them. Every viewing and distribution of the images “perpetuated that harm” and created and sustained the demand for the images.

“Your offending went significantly beyond simple possession,” said Recorder Turner. “You distributed indecent images of children to another individual.” The images were retained over a lengthy period.

Oglesby was given a suspended prison sentence of two years and eight months, with a probation requirement. He was given an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and he must register as a sex offender indefinitely.
