A historic town centre market cross has been demolished after a 4×4 car crashed into it.

Emergency services went to the scene of the incident involving a car and a pedestrian in Howden’s Market Place, Humberside Police said.

Pictures from the scene show a silver Range Rover straddled across the structure’s base, which dates back to medieval times, with sections of the cross strewn across the ground.

No further details about the condition of those involved have yet been released, but police have urged motorists to avoid the area.
